Guillaume Long met with the Minister of State in the United Kingdom

On 20th of June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, Guillaume Long, held a meeting with the Minister of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the United Kingdom, Hugo Swire.
Minister Long expressed his condolences for the recent murder of the British MP Jo Cox, at the same time he thanked the Government of the United Kingdom for their support after the devastating April 16th earthquake.
Minister Long raised the provision that Ecuador and the United Kingdom progress on bilateral agenda issues such as trade, foreign investment and cooperation on higher education.
The meeting took place one day after the fourth anniversary of the Australian citizen Julian Assange enter in the Embassy of Ecuador in London, where he took refuge to request asylum in the Ecuadorian State.
Minister Long expressed that “the differences caused by Ecuador’s decision to grant asylum to Mr. Assange should not be a barrier to strengthen a positive agenda, for the common benefit in many other areas”.
Moreover, he pointed out that the United Kingdom should take seriously the recent opinion of the United Nations, who ruled Mr Assange detention to be illegal and demanded his immediate release.
“If we have a system for the protection of Human rights that fulfil its role, we must ensure that decisions of the United Nations are met. They cannot simply be ignored when convenient. Ecuador has in the past four years, it will continue developing efforts to reach to a satisfactory solution for all parties involved in the case.”
